Happenings 3

This week in Language Arts the third graders read an informational narrative, a genre that presents information in the form of a story.  The informational piece that we read was about bats. We learned about how they sleep, what they eat, and what they look like.  In Phonics we are looking at different vowel variants and in Reading Comprehension we are sequencing events by placing them in order.  The students learned several new Vocabulary words and were introduced to main and helping verbs in Grammar.
The students were taught how to do mental math and problem solving in Math this week.  Also, they explored division patterns, estimated quotients, and explored division with remainders.
We started a new chapter in Social Studies this week; it is teaching the kids how technology changes communities.  We read lessons on transportation, communities, inventions, and medicines over time.  The students were really interested in how these things have changed and can't imagine having to walk so many miles!
In Art we read about and completed projects on center of interest and unity/variety.  The class did a great job completing their projects.
The third graders worked carefully this week on completing the uppercase cursive letter D.

In Religion we are studying the season of Lent.  The Lenten season gives us forty days to renew ourselves for Easter.  During Lent we walk with Jesus through his passion and death.  Jesus sacrificed his life for us so in return we offer small sacrifices of time and talents. New life awaits us on Easter if we are prepared to welcome the risen Christ.
